The Quiet Power of Reading as a Sadhana

A Simple Yet POWERFUL Discipline for inner transformation

Why Read?

In an age of constant noise, our attention is scattered across a thousand things and glued to screens.

Reading becomes a sacred practice: a way to gather our dispersed energies, train our concentration, step out of our mental loops and enter a space of discovery.

Why Mantric Reading?

Every genuine spiritual text holds a mantric force — it carries light, power, and consciousness.

Mantric reading is not about studying a text; it is about entering a living vibration. Reading becomes an act of communion — a way of receiving force rather than grasping meaning.

With a silent, receptive mind, the words begin to work within us. Their vibration purifies, widens, and uplifts our being, connecting us to a Presence that is always there — guiding, revealing, transforming.

Sri Aurobindo

Why Sri Aurobindo?

Sri Aurobindo, a modern Rishi, a revolutionary yogi, pioneer of India’s freedom movement and spiritual philosopher of the 20th century, foresaw an evolutionary crisis on Earth back in 1910. He saw that evolution was not finished with the human being — that a deeper, divine consciousness is pressing to emerge on Earth.

He brought together the truths of all yogic traditions and re-envisioned them for the modern world, showing that spiritual life need not withdraw from the world but can transform it from within.

His vision offers a way to integrate the spiritual and material, the individual and collective — showing the way for each of us to grow consciously and participate in the evolutionary journey that humanity is called to.

“If indeed our aim be only an escape from the world to God, synthesis is unnecessary and a waste of time… But if our aim be a transformation of our integral being into the terms of God-existence, it is then that a synthesis becomes necessary.”

A Book that Has Quietly Transformed Many Lives

I learned to trust the Divine

“I am very grateful for this space. When Purnam offered the course, I knew I had to clear everything out to be part of it.

It made me see how much I take life so seriously — as if I am doing so much — while remaining unaware of the immense work being done by Nature, by the Divine. Now, I aspire to keep that awareness alive — to bring the Divine to the centre of my life and become conscious of Nature’s constant effort to move beyond the ego.

I’m noticing small but real changes — a quiet harmony entering my life. Earlier, I used to be rigid with time or critical of myself when things didn’t go perfectly. But now there’s more acceptance.

I’m learning that when the Divine itself brings all parts along in its own rhythm, who am I to wish certain patterns away out of impatience?

I feel deeply loved — to see that the Divine is so patient, so gentle in the work being done within us. There’s no need to be harsh or violent with myself when I fail. The Divine’s love itself is guiding the way.”

Shaily Shah

I found the depth I was seeking

“Before starting The Synthesis of Yoga, I had been exploring many different schools of yoga, but I still felt that something essential was missing. There was a seeking for depth, for a truth that could really satisfy the soul.

When I began reading The Synthesis of Yoga with the Sangha in the early mornings, everything changed. Each session felt like entering a sacred space — we would read for half an hour, and yet the words would stay with me the whole day.

The depth and intensity I found here were unlike anything else. It was so powerful that at times I felt I couldn’t contain it — it was overwhelming, but in a way that awakened something vast within. Even in the very first chapter, when Sri Aurobindo speaks of the Yoga of Nature, I was just blown away. It lifted me to a different plane of understanding — beyond ‘Who am I?’ or ‘What is my problem?’

Raam Kumar

I finally understand what’s happening in my life

“It’s hard to put into words what this experience meant, but it answered so many questions and gave me a kind of map — not a fixed roadmap, but a living sense of the terrain.

Indian spirituality can be confusing — there are so many books, teachers, and paths that often seem both similar and contradictory. It can feel overwhelming.

But the way Sri Aurobindo explains everything — the different parts of being, the various yogas, the stages of life — and gives each its rightful place, helped me understand what’s truly going on: both in the grandest scale and within my own life.

It helped me see where I am in my journey, where to move next, and how to look at everything without judgment — knowing that each experience has its place and time.

It’s been a deeply beautiful learning journey — one of the most impactful and luminous works of consciousness I’ve ever encountered.

Neel Adhiraj Kumar

Seeing life as the Divine Play

For me, it’s an adoration — every sentence, every morning when we start reading, it feels like a connection with the Divine, like adoring the Divine.

He brings a whole new level of acceptance. You see Nature in different experimental stages of life — somewhere she’s perfected it, somewhere she’s perfecting it.

Even when you see not-so-great things, you know there is Yoga happening even there — it’s Nature doing her work. For us, it’s only to become more and more conscious of the play, the Divine play. That is what Yoga is — that beautiful union.

At Purnam, she has developed over 75 courses and trained more than 50 facilitators, creating transformative learning spaces that help seekers bring spiritual practice into daily life.

She will be actively guiding the upcoming journey.

Pooja Varshney

Co-Facilitator

Reading The Synthesis of Yoga has been a deeply personal unfolding for her — like being with a friend who is frank, clear, yet gentle. She sees it as Sri Aurobindo’s gift of a living framework — a map that carries within it the how of Integral Yoga.

The Living Power Behind Sri Aurobindo’s Words

…Sri Aurobindo began writing the Arya*, in 1914. It was neither a mental knowledge nor even a mental creation which he transcribed: he silenced his mind and sat at the typewriter, and from above, from the higher planes, all that had to be written came down, all ready, and he had only to move his fingers on the typewriter and it was transcribed.

It was in this state of mental silence which allows the knowledge—and even the expression—from above to pass through that he wrote the whole Arya, with its sixtyfour printed pages a month. This is why, besides, he could do it, for if it had been a mental work of construction it would have been quite impossible.

The Mother (Mirra Alfassa)

*It was in the review Arya, within a period of six years (1914- 1920), that Sri Aurobindo published most of his major works: The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga, The Human Cycle, The Ideal of Human Unity, Essays on the Gita, The Secret of the Veda, The Future Poetry, The Foundations of Indian Culture
