(the hidden centre that harmonises all parts of our nature)
This is Part 7 of this series; see the earlier parts 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 & 6
There are moments when something deep inside whispers, “Be true. Be kind. This is the way.” It isn’t the mind reasoning or the heart reacting — it’s a voice that feels ancient, quiet, unmistakably pure.
That is the Psychic Being — the evolving soul within us, the hidden flame behind the heart.
The Secret Centre of Our Being
Sri Aurobindo described three layers of our nature: the physical, the vital, and the mental. Each has its own drives and difficulties. But behind them all, there is a divine centre — the psychic being, the individual soul that grows through experience.
It is not the “higher self” of philosophy nor the “ego” of personality. It is the real person within, the one who remembers why we are here.
The psychic is the conscience of truth in us — not moral judgment, but the sense of rightness that comes from contact with the Divine.
How It Feels When the Psychic Wakes
When the psychic being begins to influence life, something subtle but unmistakable changes:
- You feel inwardly simple and sincere — no pretence, no noise.
- Love flows without demand.
- You begin to see beauty everywhere.
- Even pain becomes meaningful — a step toward growth.
Yogic psychology calls this state “the psychic poise.” One moves through life with quiet joy, detached yet deeply compassionate.
The Soul and the Instruments
Until this inner flame takes the lead, our parts — body, vital, mind — each act as separate rulers, pulling in different directions. The psychic being is the one meant to govern them harmoniously, not by control but by presence.
- It gives the body peace and receptivity.
- It gives the vital purity of motive.
- It gives the mind clarity and humility.
When this alignment happens, life no longer feels fragmented. Work, relationships, thought, action — all begin to serve a single rhythm.
The Voice of the Psychic
You’ve probably heard it — in moments of sincerity, compassion, or sudden courage. It doesn’t argue; it knows. It doesn’t command; it calls.
It often speaks softly, so we overlook it amidst the vital’s noise or the mind’s chatter. But once you start recognising its tone, it becomes your truest guide.
The Mother said, “The psychic being always knows the truth, even when the mind doubts.”
How to Recognise It
Ask yourself:
“Which part of me just spoke — the mind, the emotions, or the flame?”
Here are clues:
- The mind reasons; the psychic knows.
- The vital desires; the psychic gives.
- The body fears; the psychic trusts.
The psychic movement is always simple, luminous, and selfless. It feels like warmth and clarity joined together.
The Path of Psychic Growth
The psychic being doesn’t grow through outer achievement but through inner sincerity. It evolves every time we choose truth over comfort, love over pride, essence over form.
Sri Aurobindo suggested three core attitudes to bring the psychic forward:
Sincerity
Be truthful to the inner flame in motive and movement. Drop self-justification; let the light in.
Aspiration
Turn inward in quiet longing for the highest — not as demand, but as offering.
Rejection
Let go of what feels false, restless, or small. Each renunciation clears the path for the soul’s light.
Together, these form what he called psychic purification.
The Psychic and Everyday Life
When the psychic guides daily action, life gains a natural harmony:
- Work becomes service, not stress.
- Relationships become growth, not possession.
- Success and failure lose their power to disturb.
You begin to live from the inside out — not reacting to the world, but radiating into it.
Even simple acts — cooking, teaching, leading, listening — become offerings of the inner flame.
How to Deepen the Contact
Start with stillness behind the heart. Sit quietly for a few minutes each day and feel there a small flame — steady, peaceful, warm. Breathe into it, not with effort but with love, with tenderness.
When thoughts wander, bring attention gently back to that centre. You may begin to sense its quiet guidance in small decisions, moods, and impulses. It never forces; it suggests.
Over time, this presence becomes more tangible than the outer personality. You realise — this is who you truly are.
The Psychic Transformation
When the psychic being becomes fully active, it transforms the rest of the nature. The mind becomes intuitive, the vital becomes generous, the body becomes obedient, healthy and peaceful. It is not perfection but progress — a constant unfolding from within.
When the psychic governs, all parts discover their right relation; life becomes a harmonious offering to the Divine.
This is the beginning of integral living.
Reflection
Sit quietly tonight and ask:
“Can I feel the flame behind my heart — the one that knows before I think?”
Even if you sense it for a moment, that moment is real. It’s the centre you’ve been seeking through all your seeking.
